What makes a good website?

Are you building your own website? Or maybe you already have a onebut you are not sure if it is actually effective. Well hopefully I can help you to understand exactly what makes a good website. Here are 5 things to look out for:

1. Your website explains your business

Firstly I’m going to start with a sign that may seem obvious but sometimes gets overlooked when building a website. This is making sure that it explains your business.

You’ll want to think about what your visitors will think the first time they visit your website. It is important that visitors know what you offer from the very first time they visit your website. For example, if you are offering graphic design services, you should make it clear that you offer design services and exactly what services you offer.

If a visitor struggles to understand what your business offers then they are likely to click off your site and go to one of your competitors.

2. Easy to access information

Carrying on from the first sign, it is also important that your website is user friendly and information about your business is easy to find.

You want to make sure that if your users have any questions about how your products / services can help them, there is an easy way for them to find the answer. This can come in many forms, from clear design to dedicated pages such as an FAQ page or a services page.

3. Attractive visual design

Yet another follow on point is making sure your website is attractive. It’s all well and good having all the information on your site but if you’re not conveying it in a clear manner, it will almost mean nothing.

If you’re looking to improve your website’s design then you can hire a web designer or if you want to take a DIY approach then you can head over to a website like ThemeForrest and purchase a pre-built theme.

4. SEO Friendly

SEO or Search Engine Optimisation can really help your website to rank highly. Making sure your website is SEO friendly is a major sign that you have a good one on your hands.

There are a few ways to ensure your website is SEO friendly. Here are some of the more simple ways you can go about doing this:

– Compress images so that they have a smaller file size. There’s a fine balance with this one as you want to make the image file as small as possible but you want to have a minimal impact on the image quality. A great website for this is TinyPNG.

– Adding ‘alt’ tags and ‘title’ tags to images. If you’re using a CMS like WordPress, this is very easy to do. When you’re in the ‘media’ section of your WordPress site, click on an image and it then gives you the option to add these.

– Having enough written content will also help with your SEO. A generally accepted number of words is 300+. If you have less than this, there is a chance it could have a slight negative effect on your SEO.

There are many other ways of improving your SEO, some simple and others requiring some in-depth knowledge.

5. Mobile friendly

The final sign of a good website is that it is mobile friendly. If your website works on all devices, from mobile phones to desktops, it makes your business appear more professional.

There’s nothing more irritating than going through a website on your phone when it hasn’t been built with mobiles in mind. If this happens on your site then your visitors may decide to go elsewhere.

Finally, if your website is mobile friendly it helps with SEO. If you want to find out more about this, check out this blog about why your website needs to be mobile friendly.
